Bringing the Power of Seawater to Yorkshire Horse Owners

Bringing the Power of Seawater to Yorkshire Horse OwnersRachel and Peter Dunstan of Home Farm near Blyth have combined more than 50 years of equine experience ranging from breeding, breaking, eventing and hunting, to run a successful livery yard.

The Dunstan’s family run farm has been redeveloped to accommodate more than twenty horses with top facilities.

And in 2002 the family decided to diversify with the land and buildings dedicated to horses, and now the business is celebrating its fifth year, with the yard going from strength to strength.

The livery boasts great facilities including an indoor and outdoor school, a tread mill, and has wonderful local hacks. Home Farm is keen to stay ahead of the game and the Dunstan’s are always on the look out to build and improve their equestrian dream.

Recently the family dog, a two-year-old boxer Bruno, was injured whilst playing with another boxer Bono, who is the larger of the two. The vet recommended three months rest, but after this time nothing had really improved.

Bruno was recommended hydrotherapy treatment, which involved him swimming in salt water, and the results were brilliant.

The Dunstan’s realised the benefits of salt water not only for dogs but also for horses. Panama Spa offered the livery yard; an alternative therapy to help injured horses and help prevent any possible problems.

With the spa installed at the start of May, its popularity has exceeded there own very positive expectations, proving especially beneficial to the local racing yard. They have also had there own horses in the spa and local hunters, polo ponies and riding school ponies.

Rachel Dunstan said: “The Panama Spa is used everyday; we are so pleased with its results and the many positive benefits to injuries and helping to prevent any problems, and we hope to increase its popularity locally and nationally.

“All the horses that have been in the spa have been relaxed. We do have one horse though, who we call ‘the phantom splasher’ which keeps us smiling.

“The Panama Spa uses chilled, aerated, refrigerated saline water to help reduce any swelling and encourages the healing of lower leg injuries. It also hardens tendons and ligaments and encourages hoof growth and reduces bruising.”

Said Nick Saville of Panama Spa: “The Spa is great for a horse that has wounds, tendonitis, sore shins or strains to his legs. It’s like we’re bringing the sea to your yard.

“For horses general health care routine the Panama Spa is also a wonderful tonic and really helps them to feel well.”

The refrigerated saline water ensures that the wound is kept thoroughly clean and together with the oxygenating jets, it increases blood circulation which speeds tissue re-growth and reduces overall healing time.

Home Farm is just five miles off the A1M near Blyth, so within the easy reach of Doncaster, Sheffield and Leeds.

Natural Therapy Helps Cumano Back To Olympic Form

When world champion showjumper Jos Lansink’s top stallion Cumano went lame in Calgary last year his hopes of an Olympic ride turned to shreds.

As one world’s leading riders and trainers Jos was determined to get Cumano back to competition action and decided to try hydrotherapy as part of the treatment.

Cumano and Jos have an impressive track record, winning gold in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and they are regularly in the medals at the World and European championship level.

In 2006, he became World Champion at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen and this great achievement meant that Jos would qualify on a ‘wild card’ to compete in the individual show jumping at the Olympics in Beijing.

But when Cumano went lame due to a tendon injury at Calgary in September it looked like Jos and his team would need a miracle to get this top horse ready for the Olympics, which was less than a year away.

Jos invested in the Seahorse Hydrotherapy system from Panama Spa. This equine hydrotherapy system uses chilled, aerated, saline water, which helps to reduce swelling and encourage healing of lower leg injuries, hardening tendons and ligaments. The system is chilled to between 2 and 4°c. This increases blood circulation which speeds up tissue re-growth and speeds up overall healing time.

Traditionally horses with injuries or those which were prone to pulling muscles were taken to the beach for saltwater therapy. Now the Panama SeaHorse Spa can bring healing seawater to any yard.

Cumano is put in the spa for 20 minutes twice a day and the spa has made a huge difference in the quality and speed of the healing process with Joss and the talented grey well on their way with preparations for Beijing.

Jos regards Cumano’s time in the Panama Seahorse Spa as essential and his other horses are benefiting from daily sessions in the spa too.

Said Jos: “I am hoping to get the Belgian Federation to get a spa at the Olympics so that Cumano can continue with his daily treatments. It has made so much difference to his general health and well being and I want him on top form in Hong Kong.”
