Current ‘Best Practice’ for the treatment of tendon or ligament injuries, as recommended by VetCell Bioscience, a company specialising in stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine, is the use of hydrotherapy during the acute stages of the disease followed by implantation of the horses own stem cells. Following implantation the horses are placed on an ascending exercise regime with hydrotherapy advocated after 3 months and thereafter until the horse returns to full fitness. Greg McGarrell, CEO of VetCell reports “our results have shown horses that underwent rehabilitation following stem cell treatment at centers with experienced staff and facilities such as the Panama Spa have the highest return to performance ratio”.

“The spa is great. Although it’s still early days of having the spa in the yard, it seems to have cleared up one of the horse’s sore shins and a cut on the other horses’ legs too."
“It has definitely helped in a much quicker way than anything else would have done.”
Simon Callaghan, Newmarket Racehorse Trainer

"Caterina
had torn her tendon sheath - the vet said she required 6
weeks rest which I was upset about because she was due to
compete in the Royal International show at Hickstead in 3
weeks! I took her to the Panama Spa Equine
Hydrotherapy Unit in Gisburn and after 2/3 weeks treatment I
collected her, trimmed her up and she was second at the show
in the 138cm Show Pony Class. I would recommend this
treatment to anyone"

Our practice has been using the Panama Spa hydrotherapy pool as
an
aid in the remarkable healing of what was an extremely
nasty soft tissue injury.

After the
initial treatment for the acute phase of the condition,
Niamh was referred for four weeks hydrotherapy to the Panama
Equine Hydrotherapy Unit. She responded well to this
treatment and, in my opinion, the hydrotherapy was a
significant factor in reducing her convalescence period
and hastening her return to ridden exercise.

"Since
the introduction of the Panama Spa to a clients NH
Training Yard, there has been, in my opinion, an
improvement in the management of clinical tendon injury. I
am convinced that the appropriate use of the Spa to
provide cold hydrotherapy significantly reduces the
inflammatory response during the acute phase of injury. Minimizing
this inflammatory response limits the
action of the proteolytic enzymes which can further damage
tendon architecture."
